Deane E. Sampsell, son of William and Hester (Pfeiffer) Sampsell, was born on Aug. 18, 1928, near Aberdeen. He grew up and attended school in the Westport area. Deane enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946, receiving his honorable discharge in 1947. He was united in marriage to Ione Kaven on Sept. 15, 1951, in Warner. Together the couple made their home near Edgemont, where Deane was employed with the Black Hills Army Depot.

During his retirement, Deane enjoyed camping and collecting antiques. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed repairing bicycles in his free time. In 2004, Deane and Ione moved to Lisbon, where he remained until the time of his death.
Grateful for having shared Deane's life are his wife, Ione; daughter, Jodie (Dennis) York; and three granddogs, Peter, Gus and Hazel, all of Lisbon.
