Winter Haven, Fla.: Judith McLaughlin Ulland Winjum, 92, was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Aberdeen, S.D. She died of natural causes at her home on Sunday, July 31, 2011.
Judith attended Northern State University for two years and then graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis in 1938. She married Kenneth Ulland in December 1938 and went with him across the U.S. during his commission as a pilot in the Naval Air Corp. They returned to Aberdeen in 1946 to take charge of her family's business.
Judy helped Kenneth rebuild the business, the McLaughlin Electric Supply House "Plainsco" in Aberdeen and adjoining states. Their son, Robert, was born in 1950 and died in 2009. A second son, Richard Scott, was born and died in 1952. Judy was an elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the City Planning Board, Library Board and was active in many civic projects in Aberdeen.
Judy left South Dakota with their son Robert to live in Florida in 1965 and married Kenneth Winjum from Altamonte Springs in 1977. Ken also had formerly lived in South Dakota and was a Northern State University Alumni. Judy and Ken resided in Winter Haven, Fla., in the winter and resided in Cruso, N.C., in the summer. Judy was a member of chapter BN, PEO and she and Ken were members of the Lake Region Country Club in Winter Haven. The Ulland family as well as the Winjums continued to be very dear to Judy's life.
Judy is survived by Robert's' fiance, Tracy Sansing of Cape Coral, Fla.; stepdaughter, Cheryl Becker and Cheryl's partner Pat Smith of Safety Harbor, Fla.; stepson, Duane Winjum; grandson, Taylor; and granddaughter, Delaney, of Orlando, Fla.; stepson, Orren Winjum, of Live Oak, Fla.; her brother-in-law, Gerald Winjum and wife, Pauline, of Lakewood, Colo., and Clearwater, Fla.; her nieces and nephews from the McLaughlin line: Judie Herron of Oakridge, Tenn., Steven Herron of Knoxville, Tenn., Gayle Bortnem of Aberdeen, S.D., Karen Sween of Brookings, S.D., and David McLaughlin of Lennox, S.D. Nieces from the Ulland line: Sandra Perry of Crest Hill, Ill., Lesa Ehlers of Crystal River, Fla., and Pam Dampier of Hopkins, Minn. Especially dear were her grandniece, Julia Morse and her twin daughters, Savannah and Sierra of Yorkville, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents, a sister and two brothers.
Judy was generous to family and friends and gave to many charities. She enjoyed people, family, life, golf and bridge.
A memorial service in celebration of Judy's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at First Presbyterian church in Winter Haven, Fla.
