Hildegarde Jakober, daughter of Margaretha Vilhauer and Christian Jakober, was born December 28, 1912, at Hosmer. Her father owned and operated the Christ Jakober General Mercantile Store in Hosmer, where Hildegarde began working at the age of twelve. Besides working at her father's store, Hildegarde helped her widowed sister, Anna, and family with her boarding house service. She received her formal education at Hosmer, graduating with the HHS Class of 1931.
She married Gerhardt Bauman at Hosmer on March 8, 1936. They then moved to Gerhardt's family farm near Java, SD, and assisted his father for one and a half years. In 1938, they returned to Hosmer and opened the Bauman Gamble Store, which later became the OK Trustworthy Store, until selling the business in 1992. Hildegarde was a full-time partner in the store all her life. She very much enjoyed her daily contact with all their customers from the area, especially the children eager to buy special presents for their family members. Another highlight was preparing the gift and toy display for the holidays.
Hildegarde always maintained a large garden and, in her earlier years, enjoyed doing needlework and quilting with her sisters. Her love of music was evident in her joy of singing, her support for Gerhardt's dance band profession and the many musical opportunities they provided for their children. Gerhardt died May 22, 1992. Mrs. Bauman continued living in Hosmer until January 2007, when she moved to Bethesda Home at Webster. In her later years, she relished visiting and spending time with her children, grandchildren and especially great-grandchildren, always maintaining a treat drawer at Bethesda. Visits from Hosmer people were very dear to her. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hosmer, and the Honorary Circle.
Hildegarde is survived by her son, Rev. Dr. Paul G. (Rae) Bauman of West Bend, WI; her daughter, Margaret A. (David) Trefz of Webster; her half-sister, Amy Heckenlaible of Hosmer; 6 grandchildren: Michael Bauman of Los Angeles, CA, Kathryn Hill of Raleigh, NC, Rachael Nelson of Waverly, Iowa, Dr. Matthew Trefz of Fargo, ND, Andrew Bauman of Sheboygan, WI, and Maryann Trefz of Sioux Falls; and 7 great-grandchildren: Miles Bauman, Jendaiya, Malcolm and Langston Hill, Emma, Jonah and Kate Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her father on March 29, 1935; her mother on September 28, 1922; and her husband, one brother, six sisters and two stepsisters.
Honorary bearers will be all of Hildegarde's many friends.
Casket bearers will be Hildegarde's grandchildren as well as Bernard Grismer and Conrad Malsam of Hosmer.
