Pope's Mass: Being there worth the trouble

On April 17, my alarm clock awakened me at 2 a.m. so I could drive to a Washington hotel, where I would catch an early media bus to the new Nationals Park and prepare for coverage of Pope Benedict XVI's Mass later that morning. Groggy, I pulled myself out of bed, downed two cups of coffee already brewed from the automatic coffee maker and headed to D.C., stopping only to pick up fellow photographer Amy Davis.

Facing priest abuses, pope initiates healing

This was supposed to be an introduction. On his first papal visit to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI would celebrate a few Masses, give a speech at the United Nations, and let a nation that knew him by his reputation as the church's doctrinal enforcer experience his softer, warmer, more welcoming side.

O'Brien celebrates with pope

As a native of the Bronx, Edwin F. O'Brien once dreamed of taking the field at Yankee Stadium. Yesterday, he had his chance.

Pope looks to the future

Admirers saw an unusually personal side of Pope Benedict XVI yesterday when he ad-libbed a reference to his faults and sins and later spoke of the "sinister" Nazi regime that was the backdrop of his youth.

Day of prayer, hope of healing

After urging bishops, priests and parishioners to heal the wounds caused by the clergy sex-abuse scandal, Pope Benedict XVI talked and prayed privately with survivors yesterday in what was believed to be a first-ever meeting of a pontiff and abuse victims.

Md. Catholics join in exuberant liturgy

Jack Rosenthal awoke yesterday in a panic. The 16-year-old had overslept, missing the bus to Washington for an event with great historical and spiritual significance to him - Pope Benedict XVI's first Mass in the U.S. as pontiff.

Jean Marbella: Fielding the setup for papal event

Even though he's planned events for presidential inaugurations and managed rock tours for the likes of the B-52s, and even though his company is known for staging hooplas like official election night parties and museum anniversaries, there are still some things beyond Ajay Patil's considerable multitasking, detail-wrangling skills.

O'Malley reflects on papal Mass, Catholic faith

Gov. Martin O'Malley's Catholic faith is an important part of his public service, but he does not let it dictate the decisions he makes, he said after celebrating Mass with the pope at Nationals Park in Washington yesterday.

Pope finds points of stress with other religions

With his visits to a synagogue and a mosque, his acknowledgment of the sins of Christians against Muslims and Jews, and his decision to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, Pope John Paul II won the appreciation and trust of believers of other faiths the world over.

Pontiff vows vigilance on clergy abuse

Pope Benedict XVI, embarking on his first visit to the United States as pontiff, said yesterday that he was "deeply ashamed" of the sexual abuse scandal that has shaken the Roman Catholic Church in this country and pledged greater efforts by the church to bar pedophiles from the priesthood.

An institution being reborn

The challenges confronting the Catholic Church in America are many: an aging membership, a declining priesthood, a sex abuse scandal that has rattled faith in the hierarchy. Roughly one-third of Americans who were raised Catholic have left the church, and those who remain are as divided over its teachings on abortion, homosexuality and other issues as the population at large.

'Incredible' influx changes church

The future rolled into Our Lady of Pompei Church a few weeks ago. Her name was Yoselin Garcia, and she sat quietly in her stroller, a bit player in the vast demographic shift reshaping the Roman Catholic Church in America.

Striving for a balance of access, safety

From the moment Shepherd One touches down today at Andrews Air Force Base, Pope Benedict XVI will be afforded all the protection due a man who is both a head of state - Vatican City - and leader of the world's largest church.

Politics to greet pope on U.S. visit

Pope Benedict XVI arrives in the United States this week amid a full-throttle presidential campaign, with Sens. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain seeking support from the same engaged Catholics the pontiff hopes to reach.

Deciphering Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI comes to Washington this week a virtual stranger in the United States, home to the third-largest Catholic flock on the planet. But his itinerary, which includes stadium-sized Masses for tens of thousands of followers, will provide an opportunity to change his image as a dour disciplinarian.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore will celebrate its bicentennial starting next month with work on a new prayer garden near downtown, musical performances in the Basilica of the Assumption and an exhibit of the Catholic community's history at St. Mary's Seminary.
