That summer, he delivered the keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. His opponent in the senate race was supposed to Jack Ryan. However, Ryan withdrew from the race amid sexual allegations by his ex-wife. Alan Keyes replaced Ryan on the ballot, and in the general election, Obama won easily, grabbing 70 percent of the vote.

Doing a good thing

Obama, McCain have contrasting styles in Web advertising
Los Angeles Times Staff WriterIt's been hard to avoid Barack Obama's distinctive red, white and blue "O" logo on display ads as you tool around online, particularly on news sites. In contrast, the star logo of his Republican presidential rival John McCain's campaign hasn't shined as...Tags: Elections, Joe Biden, Political Candidates, Primaries, John McCain

McCain's maverick side is overstated; he's no longer an independent

Alaska's 'first dude' masters supporting role
With all the news about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, there's been little room for information about her husband. On Thursday we learned that the oil worker-champion snowmobiler-hunter-commercial fisherman sometimes refers to himself as Alaska's "first dude."...Tags: Film Festivals, Regional Authority, Satellite and Cable Service, Popular Music, Summer Olympics

Clarifying the record on the born-alive bill
