Was Shannan Gilbert from Jersey City the victim of a serial killer on Long Island? Suffolk County Police suspect she might be among the dead found on a desolate stretch of beach near Babylon, NY, where a human skeleton was found Saturday. Another three decomposed bodies were found on Monday. So far, none have been identified. 25 year old Gilbert was believed to be a prostitute. Police think she met someone on Craigslist in May, and disappeared near the area where the four bodies were found.

Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky who commands Suffolk County Police Homicide told PIX 11 News "it's definitely one person doing this. There is a pattern. It's localized. Common sense dictates it would be one person."

The Craigslist connection runs deeper. Published reports say police have questioned the Brooklyn boyfriend of Megan Waterman, a missing woman from Maine, who is reported to have travlled to Long Island in response to an escort and might be among the Gilgo Beach victims. Searchers have set up a website to publicize a reward for information leading to Waterman's discovery. Police say at least two of the victims were female.

Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsy told PIX 11 News, "Right now we're forensically working with the bones and the bodies to determine cause and manner death and try to ID the victims."

Police acknowledge the cluster of bodies does not appear to be a coincidence. The bodies were likely dumped from a vehicle anytime from the past month to two years ago based on the state of decompensation. The New York City Medical Examiner is helping local authorities identify the remains through DNA and dental records. That process could takes weeks, or months. The FBI is on standby to provide assistance if requested.
