Men on the moon: 40th anniversary
"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." reported Apollo 11 Mission Commander Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969.
Launched on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. It carried Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin E. 'Buzz' Aldrin Jr.
On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Collins orbited above. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" said Armstrong as he stood on the moon.
