Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson is the highest-paid government employee in Baltimore County, according to salary data recently released by the county under the Maryland Public Information Act.
Johnson, who has worked for the county since 1979, is earning a salary this year of $230,447.93, making him the highest-paid employee by about $5,000.
Other top earners include high-level officials and department heads.
Fred Homan, the county's chief administrative officer, is the second-highest earner. He's followed by Robert Stradling, IT director; Arnold Jablon, director of permits, approvals and inspections; and Fire Chief John Hohman.
Johnson isn't the only member of the Police Department in the top 10, according to the data. Cols. Joseph E. Burris, who is in charge of the administrative and technical services bureau, and Peter S. Evans, who recently retired after overseeing the operations bureau, rounded out the list.
County Executive Kevin Kamenetz's salary is $175,000, making him the 16th-highest-paid county employee.
It's not unusual for top political officials to make less than other government workers. According to Baltimore's most recent salary data, for example, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's gross pay was $165,249.86, while some members of the city's Police Department earned as much as $235,000. Gov. Larry Hogan, meanwhile, earns far less than the football and basketball coaches at the University of Maryland, College Park.
