U.S. Labor Secretary Tom Perez, a candidate for Democratic National Committee chair, will deliver the keynote address at the party's annual legislative luncheon in Annapolis on Jan. 10, officials announced Thursday.
Perez — who previously served as Montgomery County's first Latino councilman and secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation — will join state Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., and House Speaker Michael E. Busch in speaking at the luncheon.
Perez is running for the chairmanship against Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison; Ray Buckley, party chair in New Hampshire; Jaime Harrison, party chair in South Carolina; and Sally Boynton Brown, Democratic executive director in Idaho. The election takes place Feb. 25 in Atlanta.
Maryland Democratic Party Chair D. Bruce Poole called Perez "exactly the kind of change maker Democrats need at the helm of the DNC."
"Tom Perez has long been an advocate for Marylanders, passing progressive laws as a Montgomery County council member and advocating for progressive change both before and since his time as an elected official in our state," Poole said.
