Now that Maryland’s budget has weathered the fiscal crisis, advocates for improved mental health services contend that money should be funneled their way.

More than 200 people attended an Annapolis rally Tuesday to call for more spending on statewide mental health services to better deal with crises and to ensure that no patients fall through the cracks.

State Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr., a Montgomery County Democrat, told the crowd he was drafting the Mental Health Safety Act of 2013, which will call for mental health services in every school, create housing opportunities for low-income residents with mental illnesses and address mental health needs of people in jail, among other provisions. The measure had not been introduced as of Tuesday.

The Maryland Mental Health Coalition, an umbrella organization of 30 mental health groups, organized the event.
