Groups on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate have bought television airtime in the Baltimore market for next month, a review of the public files shows.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance, which opposes the law, would go up on television first with commercials starting on Oct. 8. They are spending about $93,000 at WBAL alone and have at least made inquires at other stations.
Marylanders for Marriage Equality, which supports the law, has reserved airtime starting much later: Oct. 22. They are spending around $160,000 for 166 commercials on WBAL during that time and have also been talking to other stations about time, records show.
Television time, of course, is subject to changes. And these groups can go up earlier if they decide more commercials are needed and they have money to pay for the ads.
Supporters of the law recently hosted a high dollar fundraiser in New York with a glittering set of celebrities. And more events are coming up: Gov. Martin O'Malley will appear D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray on Oct. 2 for a fundraiser. On Oct. 8, O'Malley and Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo will have a Monday Night Football party at Mother's in Federal Hill.
Marylanders will have a crowded ballot this year with four high-profile issues to decide. In addition to same-sex marriage, they will vote on expanding higher education opportunities to some illegal immigrants, the new congressional map and expanding gambling. So far, only gambling interests have been airing television commercials.
