Del. Justin D. Ross, one of most effective leaders in the Democratic caucus, said Thursday that he will resign from the House of Delegates to focus on his commercial real estate business and spend more time with his wife and four children.
"I'm going to take a breather," said Ross. "I'm really excited for the next chapter."
Ross, 36, will leave office effective Nov. 9. He has represented Prince George's County for ten years.
He has been a member of House Speaker Michael E. Busch's leadership team since 2007, and was instrumental in rounding up votes for the same-sex marriage law and the gambling expansion measure that recently passed in special session. Both laws will be put the voters in November.
Busch said in a statement that Ross has played a "critical" role in "the passage of every piece of important legislation" in recent years.
Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller called Ross "one of the brightest stars in Annapolis" and said he is "truly saddened" by his planned departure.
