In his latest criticism of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Del. Pat McDonough says she is “creating a super magnet” for illegal immigration by encouraging Latinos and other immigrants to move to the city.
The Baltimore County Republican, whose district also includes part of Harford County, planned a news conference Friday in Essex to criticize the mayor's policies.
“The mayor's 'amnesty atmosphere' is creating unfair competition for jobs and entrance into community college for the legal residents of Baltimore,” McDonough said Thursday in a news release. “The mayor is pandering to the Hispanic vote, creating a super magnet for an influx of illegal immigrants.”
Rawlings-Blake has said immigrants are crucial to her goal of adding 10,000 new families to the city's population over the next decade. In March, she signed an executive order barring police and other city employees from asking about citizenship status.
McDonough’s announcement of his news conference also claimed that “young illegal immigrants will vigorously compete for low-skilled and entry-level jobs, impacting black youths.”
McDonough has continually criticized Rawlings-Blake. In May, he sparked controversy when he said that “roving mobs of black youth” terrorize Baltimore and that Gov. Martin O’Malley should declare the Inner Harbor “a no-travel zone.” At the time, the mayor’s office called his remarks “a sad and racially charged stunt.”
In an email to The Baltimore Sun, Rawlings-Blake spokesman Ryan O’Doherty said Thursday that the mayor and her administration “stopped paying a lot of attention to [McDonough] when he told everyone to stop visiting the Inner Harbor.”
“Since then, more than a million people have and had a good time,” O’Doherty said.
