Seven members of the Prince George's County Council will endorse Rep. Donna F. Edwards' campaign for Senate at an event in Largo on Wednesday.
Edwards, a Democrat, represents the 4th Congressional District, which is based in Prince George's County. She is running to replace Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, who will retire in 2017.
Edwards' campaign noted seven of the county's nine council members would support her candidacy. Earlier this week Edwards also received the endorsement of Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois, the first African American female to serve in the Senate.
"I am proud to stand with Donna Edwards," Prince George's County Council Chairman Mel Franklin said in a statement released by the campaign. "Donna's experiences and values have made her who she is today, a principled, progressive fighter with a unique, proven record of improving the lives of working families."
Edwards is running against Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a Montgomery County Democrat who has been endorsed by the members of his own county council as well the county executives of Montgomery, Frederick and Prince George's counties.
In addition to Franklin, the council members who are endorsing Edwards include: Derrick Davis, Danielle Glaros, Andrea Harrison, Mary Lehman, Obie Patterson and Karen Toles.
