Gov. Martin O'Malley swore in Joseph P. Gill as Secretary of Natural Resources Tuesday, replacing John R. Griffin at the top of the 1,200-employee agency.
Griffin has been named to replace Matt Gallagher as the governor's chief of staff as of June 1.
Gill, 55, who had been deputy secretary, inherits the agency with just over 18 months left to go in O'Malley's term in office.
Griffin, 67, has wound up his second term at the state natural resources agency. He previously sered under Gov. Parris N. Glendening.
Gill's deputy, also appointed by O'Malley last month, will be Frank Dawson, a 29-year department veteran who had previously served as assistant secretary for aquatic resources.
