Eric Wargotz takes a 'second look' at Senate run

Eric Wargotz, a Republican who ran an unsuccessful campaign against Democratic Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski in 2010, said Saturday he wants to take a "second look" at running for Senate this year now that State Sen. C. Anthony Muse is in the race.

Earlier this year Wargotz considered running against Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin but announced in November he would not seek the seat. Now he says that Muse's candidacy -- announced Thursday -- may provide an opportunity for a Republican candidate to be more competitive.

"With the changed dynamic, we're going to take a second look," he said.

Wargotz doesn't have much time to decide: The deadline to file to put a candidate's name on the ballot for the April 3 primary is Wednesday.

Former U.S. Secret Service agent Dan Bongino of Severna Park is the only Republican who appears to be actively campaigning for the GOP nomination. He has also suggested that Muse's decision to run could force Cardin to direct more resources toward the primary election.

Wargotz captured just under 36 percent of the vote in his 2010 race. That left Mikulski with a commanding 62 percent of the vote.
