Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Wednesday criticized comments made by U.S. Rep. Andy Harris that citizens should 'get over' the verdict in high-profile George Zimmerman case.

At a news conference at City Hall, Rawlings-Blake called Harris' comments "unbelievably dismissive, callous and out-of-touch" and dared him to say them to the parents of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen killed by Zimmerman.

"Trayvon Martin died because George Zimmerman had a concealed weapon. Period," said Rawlings-Blake, who said the city police department is targeting gun violence in Baltimore. "It's senseless and it's frustrating. And it's more frustrating when I hear people like Congressman Andy Harris say that we should get over it. It is so unbelievably dismissive, callous and out-of-touch that someone would say that. I would dare him to say that to Trayvon Martin's parents."

Harris, Maryland's sole Republican representative in Congress, is receiving attention for comments he made on WMAL radio Tuesday about last week's verdict in the trial of Zimmerman.

"We're hung up on this one case where this one fellow was in fact found not guilty by a jury," Harris said during the interview. "That's the way the American law system works. Get over it."

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida, fatally shot Martin last year in a case that captured national attention. He was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges on Saturday, sparking protests around the country, including several in Baltimore.

Harris, in his second term, represents Maryland's 1st Congressional District, including the Eastern Shore and portions of Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties.

Harris' comments were picked up by CNN and other national media outlets Tuesday.
