Anne Arundel County Councilman John Grasso will formally open his campaign for the county executive’s spot at an event Dec 9 at La Fontaine Bleu – while serving up his own brand of county water.
Grasso, a Glen Burnie Republican in the midst of his first term on the County Council and who is known for his outspoken ways, will be the first candidate to make the announcement for the 2014 political contest.
He bottled his own water from the county's supply Wednesday – it’s called Pure – promising to donate proceeds to the county government. A businessman, he got into the water venture when his effort to get the county to bottle and market its water went nowhere, and he criticized the government’s lack of initiative.
Other potential Republican candidates include Del. Steve Schuh and Dan Bongino, a former U.S. Secret Service Agent from Severna Park who in November lost a bid for U.S. Senate. Bongino said Wednesday he is considering the county executive race among others in Maryland.
Democrat Joanna Conti, who lost to incumbent Republican County Executive John R. Leopold in 2010, said she strongly considering another county executive bid for 2014.
Leopold is prevented by term limits from running again.
