Mt. Hebron coach Dan Harman knows that nobody cares who was missing in the lineup when his team lost to River Hill, 37-27, at the Iron Eagle Duals on Dec. 28. A loss is a loss, no matter what. No excuses.

So when the Vikings squared off against the Hawks on Tuesday with a lot more on the line in a big Howard County dual meet, Harman stressed to his team that revenge was necessary.

“One-hundred percent we talked about revenging that loss over winter break. That was definitely a big factor coming in,” Harman said. “It’s about wrestling to our ability. We knew that that loss was not the team we put out there [on Tuesday].”

River Hill, which had won eight of its last 10 matches, jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Mt. Hebron took control by winning six straight bouts and eight of the next nine en route to a 36-31 victory.

The Vikings bumped their lineup up a weight class after 132 pounds to try to gain an advantage in the matchups, and the result was 27 unanswered points.

“Our game plan was dodging [Will] Henrickson and bumping everyone else up and crossing fingers there,” Harman said. “They came through with three pins in a row at 145 through 160. Any time you bump kids up you never know how it’s going to go giving up weight.”

Matt Greenlee (126 pounds) scored a reversal to beat the final buzzer in a 2-1 victory over Khiem Doan to kickoff the dual and Henrickson (132) followed with a dominating win by fall to give the Hawks (7-3 Howard County, 21-7 overall) a 9-0 lead.

From there, however, the Vikings (9-1, 17-3) took control and won several close matches to pull away. Adam Scherr (138) won a 9-5 decision, and Bryce Kampert (145), Jamison Hulbert (152) and Ali Pender (160) each stuck their opponents before the start of the third period to make it 21-9 in favor of Mt. Hebron.

Joe Gonzales (170) won a tight match, 4-3, and Marcus Suri (182) had one of the biggest upsets of the dual by knocking off Zach Wasilewski, 4-1, in three overtimes. Suri scored two near-fall points in the second overtime and then escaped in the third.

“We were confident we could win at 170, so bumping Marcus up to 182 was a big question mark,” Harman said. “Thinking we could squeak one out; he wrestled really tough and that was huge there.”

Alex Wasilewski (195) stopped River Hill’s skid with a pin, but another overtime decision in favor of the Vikings essentially put the match out of reach. Isa Pender (220) scored the match-ending takedown just five seconds into overtime to defeat Kai Uecker, 6-4.

A forfeit to Nick Nordhausen (285) gave Mt. Hebron an insurmountable 21-point advantage at 36-15 with three matches remaining.

The Hawks finished the meet strong, however. Eric Robinson (106) scored an 11-0 major decision and Jonah Richardson (113) won by fall before Michael Crisitello (120) overcame a late deficit and pinned Yahir Lemus in 5 minutes, 50 seconds. It’s the second time Crisitello has beaten Lemus this season.

“We’re going to wrestle for six minutes,” River Hill coach Kevin Cannon said of Crisitello. “We were ready for him today and we were ready for him on [Dec.] 28th and we will be ready for him at the county tournament.”

Cannon said it’s the second time this season his team has struggled after having no practice the day before a meet. The Hawks also lost to Atholton, 39-27, on Jan. 2.

“We haven’t had practice since Thursday and same with them, but it’s hard to get a team ready,” he said. “I give more credit to them for that. ... It’s just heart. Those guys have got to want it.”
