Local cross country team shines at AAU Junior Olympic National Meet

There were 54 kids from the Bullseye Running/Howard County Striders youth cross country team that traveled to McAlpine Creek Park in North Carolina on Dec. 2 for the AAU Junior Olympic cross country national meet.

The 11-12 girls team highlighted the meet, capturing first place in their division with 49 points. Also turning in a notable team performance were the 7-8 boys, which finished in second place with 51 points.

There were six individuals that placed in eighth place or better individually, earning them All-American status. Those runners were: Mary Gorsky (11-12, 11:27), Erin McQuitty (11-12, 11:23), Leah Stephens (11-12, 11:29), Ryan Hughes (9-10, 11:38), David Morgan (7-8, 8:36) and Alex Zirkelbach (7-8, 8:44).

In addition, there were 14 other runners who were awarded a medal for finishing in 25th place or better. Those runners were: Maria Grafov (13-14), Michelle Weaver (13-14), Nina Connors (11-12), Kiley Mann (11-12), Avery Oergel (11-12), Gabrielle Shord (11-12), Evan Quinn (11-12), Jack Reading (11-12), Wren Kucler (9-10), Cameron Connors (9-10), Tanner Hevner (9-10), Ashlyn Hevner (7-8), Griffin Ellinghaus (7-8) and Matthew Moore (7-8).
