Howard County boys, girls all-star basketball games rescheduled for Tuesday

UPDATE: After an issue with permits forced an initial postponement of the Howard County boys and girls basketball all-star games, the event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 20 at Oakland Mills High School.

Elkridge Basketball will serve as the sponsor for the event.

The girls will play first at 6:30 p.m. and the boys will follow immediately after, with a girls against boys 3-point shooting contest scheduled to take place between the two games. The majority of the area’s top seniors are slated to participate in the all-star event, which has an admission charge of $5 that is good for both games.

On Thursday afternoon, shortly after news spread that the game was not going to be held as originally planned on March 16, the Howard County Public School System issued the following statement:

“Unfortunately, the group that organized the all-star basketball event didn't coordinate with the school system's Use of School Facilities Office and the gym had been reserved by another group. We appreciate their efforts to spotlight many of our student-athletes and would be happy to work with the event organizers to find an alternate date and location for the event through the use of facilities process.”

That alternate date was determined to be next Tuesday following a meeting on Friday evening.

The game for the girls will pit an East squad made up of players from Atholton, Hammond, Howard and Reservoir up against a West squad consisting of players from Glenelg, Long Reach, Marriotts Ridge, River Hill and Chapelgate. Both teams feature 11 players.

The boys game, meanwhile, is being called the “Class Clash” as the county’s small schools (class 2A) will square off against the county’s large schools (class 3A/4A).

The 2A squad has players from Glenelg, Glenelg Country, Hammond, Marriotts Ridge, Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake. The 3A squad has players from Atholton, Centennial, Chapelgate, Howard, Long Reach, Mt. Hebron and Reservoir.

For full rosters for both games, see below.

In addition to the two games, there are also plans for a dunk contest at halftime of the boys game and the 3-point contest between the girls and boys games.

The 3-point event will be set up in a girls against boys format, with five girls going head-to-head against five boys. Each shooter will have 45 seconds to make as many shots as they can — the winner of each match-up will earn a point for their team.

The match-ups for the shootout will be: Jess Foster (Glenelg) against Jalen Morant (Chapelgate); Ashlyn McInerney (Hammond) against Robert Gordon (Hammond); Madison Burris (Howard) against Andrew Blanco (Howard); Sarah Dawitt (River Hill) against Jacob Krause (River Hill); and Courtney Furr (Howard) against Sean Taylor (Centennial).

The dunk contest participants are still yet to be determined.
