Tsao hat trick leads Howard field hockey past Reservoir

A week after suffering a shutout loss at the hands of Glenelg in its season opener, Howard flipped the script in its second game on Tuesday against Reservoir.

Led by a hat trick from junior Jamie Tsao, the Lions scored four times and held the Gators scoreless en route to a 4-0 victory that evens the team’s county record at 1-1 this fall.

“Unfortunately, because we only had one scrimmage, we kind of came out a little bit slow to the Glenelg game — they had three goals in the first 17 minutes I believe. After that, the rest of the game was a little more even once we started playing our game,” Howard coach Kristen Vance said. “So that was a major focus today, playing how we know we can play for a full game and I think they did a really good job of that.”

Howard’s pressuring style went a long way against the Gators, with the Lions generating nearly three times as many shots over the course of the afternoon. Early on, that offensive possession didn’t lead to goals, but the tone had been set.

“As a team, I feel that we had just a lot of shots on goal. Not every one went in, but we just kept pushing and pushing. Eventually just our corners and getting it up the field allowed us to get a bunch of shots in and helped us get a victory today,” said Howard senior Kelsey Murray.

Tsao finally broke through with 13 minutes left in the first half off a feed from senior Emily Taylor. Then seven minutes later, Tsao scored again — this time with an assist from Zoe Summa — to give Howard a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Lions kept coming after the break, with Maddie Land getting in on the scoring with 25:44 left off a pass from Tsao. Then, with 18:56 left, Tsao capped the days scoring by redirecting in a feed from Emily Taylor.

Murray said the effort was definitely something she thinks the team will be able to build upon.

“I think just keeping the momentum from this game today will help us continue the season,” she said. “I feel that if we just are strong and we really work on our communication, which we were great with today … we will be able to execute more and win those harder games this season.”
