Reservoir and Glenelg were the big winners Thursday on opening night of the 2013-2014 Howard County wrestling season.

The Gators got an early jump in the race for the league championship, taking out Centennial, 55-22, on the strength of pins by Tyler Ponton (120, :45), Trent Kilcarr (126, 3:21), Mason Kilcarr (138, 1:24), Wes Beattie (182, :45) and Michael Sullivan (285, 3:54).

Sam Boulos (152, 3:16), Steven Wysocki (195, 3:12) and Carlos Lucero (220, 2:44) got the pins for the Eagles, while defending county champion and state finalist Austin Kraisser (145) blanked Reservoir's Hans Wicklein in a battle between top wrestlers.

Glenelg, which is expected to battle Reservoir and River Hill for the league championship, made a statement by handling private school powerhouse Archbishop Spalding, 42-31. Craig Burris' pin at heavyweight clinched the Gladiators victory in the final bout of the match. Freshmen Garrett Murray (120) and Michael Autry (152), a pair of Warhawk junior league veterans, were impressive in their Gladiator debut, also scoring pins, along with sophomore Parker Griffie.

Josh Kendrick (113) earned a hardfought 8-4 decision over Alex Ngo, followed by pins by freshman Jimmy Hayden (120) and Jeff Hayden (126), to give the Vikings an early 15-0 lead, but Urbana stormed back with 18 straight points by team leaders Tyler Makosy, Jake Makosy and Morgan Way to take the lead.

Connor Strunk (152) and Ryan Hassan (220) also pinned for the Vikings.
