Yard sale and a mulch sale are coming your way

Lisbon United Methodist Church will hold its annual yard sale on May 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the church. If you would like to reserve a free space to sell your treasures, call 410-489-9519. The church is at 15875 Frederick Road, in the heart of Lisbon.

The Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department is currently holding a mulch sale every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the new building at the traffic circle at Route 144 and Woodbine Road.

You can also pick up your mulch on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. There is no delivery service.

The double-shredded hardwood mulch is $18 per yard. All proceeds will go to the department's new building fund.

Howard County has just opened a state-of-the-art composting operation at the Alpha Ridge Landfill. The county will double its curbside food scrap collection to 10,000 households, which is the largest in Maryland.

It is expected that 400 tons of material will be diverted to produce mulch, topsoil and other byproducts. The material will be ground up and connected to an odor-control system, then sold after composting for 10 weeks. The new facility cost $800,000 to construct.

It has been costing the County $41.50 per ton to remove the waste to a landfill in Virginia. It will cost $38.50 per ton to process it at the new facility.

Tours of the facility are available by contacting 410-313-2022.
