Howard County has just opened a state-of-the-art composting operation at the Alpha Ridge Landfill. The county will double its curbside food scrap collection to 10,000 households, which is the largest in Maryland.
It is expected that 400 tons of material will be diverted to produce mulch, topsoil and other byproducts. The material will be ground up and connected to an odor-control system, then sold after composting for 10 weeks. The new facility cost $800,000 to construct.
It has been costing the County $41.50 per ton to remove the waste to a landfill in Virginia. It will cost $38.50 per ton to process it at the new facility.
Tours of the facility are available by contacting 410-313-2022.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
