I thought it was just me until I talked with fellow flower and bird lover Kate Tufts, a volunteer at the Robinson Nature Center, who revealed that she too has been seeing a huge proliferation of the Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly population this season.

I am not exaggerating when I describe a "swarm" of the beautiful butterflies on the Echinacea plants in our garden. Similarly local gardeners Eric and Kim Clawson describe hundreds of the beautiful butterflies observed in the area of their Butterfly Bush plants.

"We've had an abundance of hummingbirds this year, too," said a delighted Kim Clawson.

Area gardeners have agreed that the sightings have been phenomenal. This is one season when the vagaries of Mother Nature have been kind to garden lovers. Keep it comin'.

What a guy. Thank you to Art Boone, who even with a hand injury went ahead and played with his band Southwest Bluegrass one of the evenings of the Howard County Fair. Art had injured his hand when doing volunteer work at the Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club. That's Art Boone for you — always a trouper.

Josh Dill enjoyed pitching in as a volunteer at the fair too. Dill always does a stint with fellow members of the Lion's Club and this year was no different. For Dill, his favored task is the clean up after each evening at the fair.

Do you love "muscle" cars? How about hot rods, sports cars and classic sedans? Come out to the Howard County Fairgrounds on Aug. 31 for the shiniest chrome and sharpest fins around. The auction begins at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Baltimore Washington Collector Car Auction team. For a preview list of vehicles or any information go to the website at http://www.auctionclassiccars.com.

Book lovers wait all year. As the school year begins and calendars are filled in, it's time to mark the dates for the 18th annual Book Sale at Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church. This year the sale will take place on Sept. 12 and 13, 3-7 p.m.. and Sept 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is the largest used book sale in Howard County. Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church is at 14551 Burntwoods Road. All proceeds from this phenomenal book sale go toward church-sponsored charities.
