Knights of Columbus put on their running shoes [West Friendship]

It's a fun run for members of the St. Louis Council of the Knights of Columbus, who will be hoofing it around the gorgeous grounds of the Shrine of St. Anthony on Folly Quarter Road on Aug. 30 beginning at 8 a.m.

The 11th annual 5K and 10K charity run benefits local organizations and programs, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County.

Food will be provided by the always generous chefs of "Smokin' Hot Grille". Need information about the run or the Knights of Columbus? Go to or call 443-995-1211.

An historical tour of the Shrine and Manor House is set for Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony. The tour takes about one and one half hours. Families are welcome for this walking tour which includes the Manor House and the grounds at the 12290 Folly Quarter Road campus. No charge for this fascinating tour of a local historic place.

Jason Bostron and Daisy Phillips, the couple who make up the "Philtrons" continue on their incredible bicycle journey titled "The Philtrons Pedal South." Jason grew up in the West Friendship area. The trek began in Alaska in late May and the ultimate destination is Argentina.

Last time I checked on the travel journal blog, the Philtrons had made it to the Pacific Northwest and were enjoying the thrilling sights of the region around Mt. Rainier while also catching up with family members who caught up with the couple in Washington state.

Book lovers wait all year. As the school year begins and calendars are filled in, it's time to mark the dates for the 19th annual Book Sale at Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church. This year the sale will take place on Sept. 11 and 12, 3-7 p.m., and Sept 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is the largest used book sale in Howard County. Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church is at 14551 Burntwoods Road. All proceeds from this phenomenal book sale go toward church-sponsored charities.

The West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary yard sale is set for Sept. 6, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested in participating as a vendor? Call 410-442-1471 to sign up for a vendor space.

Don't forget. The West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is collecting pantry supplies for local food banks as part of the organization's Community Outreach Program. The greatest needs include paper towels, toilet paper and small-sized liquid laundry detergent.

Items may be dropped off at the front entrance of Station 3, Routes 32 and 99, up until Sept. 10. The supplies will be delivered to West Liberty United Methodist Church for distribution in September.
