Shrine of St. Anthony invites you on a tour [West Friendship]

Former federal bankruptcy judge Roger Whelan is set to lead the pack during an historical tour of the Manor House and the Shrine of St. Anthony on May 25 at 2 p.m.

The grounds of the shrine are never lovelier than this time of year. The tour lasts about two hours. Judge Whelan is an expert on the history of the historic Manor House, which in 1832 was home to Emily MacTavish, granddaughter of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

There is no charge for the tour. The Shrine of St. Anthony, presently home to the Franciscan Friars, is at 12290 Folly Quarter Road.

When one observes West Friendship Elementary Chorus Concert on the calendar, it's a sure sign that the school year is coming to a close. The angelic voices of the West Friendship Elementary choral students will resound on May 29 when the kids perform at 2:30 p.m. during a school performance and again at 7 p.m. during a performance for families.

It's Italian Night at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on May 22, 6-8 p.m. Dine in or carry out during the monthly dinner, which features a full meal including desserts. The dinner is provided by the generosity of the owner of Smokin' Hot Bar and Grille in Glenwood.

Proceeds from the dinner benefit the St. Andrew's mission to Appalachia. The mission workers from St. Andrews will travel to Barnes Mountain in Irvine, Ky., from July 27 to Aug. 2 this summer. St. Andrews is at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood. Questions? Call 410-489-4035.

Reminders of community events. If the kids didn't get enough of bunnies and rabbits at Easter time, bring them out to the Howard County Fairgrounds on May 24, beginning at 9 a.m., when the Hare Raisers 4-H Club is participating in the club's annual rabbit show. The herd action takes place in the Sheep and Goat building. No admission for this wonderful opportunity to see rabbits up close.

The Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church mini flea market is set for June 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carole Kramer, coordinator of the yearly Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church book sale, announces the seventh annual flea market and "mini" book sale.

A "hamfest" is set for May 25, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship. The Maryland FM Memorial Day Hamfest features flea market amateur radio items and more. Admission fee is $6.
