Western Howard County women like Nancy White, Amy Deardon, Josie O'Donnell and Lisa Hawes do a lot more than work out when they meet at the Curves gym on Ten Oaks Road.

Seems there is always a fundraiser of some sort going on with these active citizens. Last month the women held a coat sale, earning nearly $600 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Curves honcho Suzy Hill is delighted.

Speaking of fun with a purpose, the proceeds from the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church monthly dinner this month will benefit Bridges to Housing Stability. Bridges assists Howard County households that are homeless or in danger of losing housing by providing a supportive environment for housing stability, including goal planning, referrals, mediation with landlords and assistance with budgeting and problem solving.

The dinner is set for Feb. 27, 6-8 p.m. Dine in or carry out. Cost is $9 per person or $30 per family, no matter how many folks make up the family unit. This month the menu is chili, salad, cornbread and desserts galore.. St. Andrew's is at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood. Questions? Call Lynne Hall Quinn at 410-292-8202.

Congratulations to our hometown Del. Gail Bates, who was recently awarded the prestigious John Shaw Award during a ceremony in Annapolis on Feb. 5. Bates was cited for her exemplary track record of supporting pro-business legislation in 2013.

On Feb. 25, 7 to 8 p.m., the place to be is the Shrine Library at the Shrine of St. Anthony if you would like to get in on a book discussion of "The Confessions of St. Augustine." Often hailed as one of the most influential books ever written, the discussion is led by Brother Lawrence LaFlame.

If you do not have a copy of the book, one can be purchased at the Shrine book store. No fee for the book group. Questions? Call the office at 410-531-2800. The Shrine of St. Anthony is at 12290 Folly Quarter Road.
