I would like to extend belated congratulations to one of our community members, Beth Kennedy, who was honored at the annual Howard County Celebration of Sports on Oct. 15.
Beth has coached girls' lacrosse — both rec league and travel — in Howard County for nearly a decade. This year, the Department of Recreation and Parks named her a GoodSports Coach of the Year based upon her qualities of honor, civility, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and respect.
Thank you, Beth, for your dedication, and for being a positive role model for our youth!

There's nothing like a beautifully decorated home at the holidays to help one feel festive — and perhaps inspired to try similar ornamentation. On Sunday, Dec. 15, the Howard County Historical Society will offer its 37th annual Holiday House Tour featuring five properties — the Shrine of Saint Anthony and Folly Quarter Manor, both in Ellicott City, Richland Farm in Clarksville, Dalton in Columbia's Thunder Hill neighborhood, and Salopha in Sykesville.
Buses will leave promptly at 1 p.m. from Frederick Road at the Charles E. Miller Branch Library in Ellicott City and will return at 6:30 p.m. Attendees should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to check in.
Tickets cost $35 for Historical Society Members, $45 for guests of members, and $50 for the general public. The latter price also includes a free 2014 historical society membership. To purchase tickets online, go to hchsmd.org/events#HouseTour; tickets will also be available in the Miller Library parking lot on the day of the event.
