Woodstock dentist offering cash for your Halloween candy [Marriottsville/Sykesville/Woodstock]

After the Halloween sugar frenzy abates and parents have secretly looted their tykes' treat bags, what's to be done with the remaining glut of sweets?

Well, little ones can happily surrender their booty because Woodstock dentist Walter Mazzella is offering Cash for Candy for the sixth year running. Simply deliver the treats to Mazzella's practice at 10775 Birmingham Way, Suite 1, in the Waverly Woods Village Center between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4 through Friday, Nov. 8. Children will receive $1 per pound in return.

The excess candy will be shipped to U.S. troops overseas via Operation Homefront. Win-win! Parents can help spare their kids some cavities while supporting our soldiers.

Mazzella has practiced in Woodstock since 2001. Go to http://www.waverlywoodsdental.com to learn more, or call 410-203-2552.

The Howard County Conservancy invites service-minded individuals and groups to "come get dirty" at a Fall Workday on Saturday, Nov. 2. Projects, which include invasive plant removal, animal pen maintenance and winter preparation, will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and remain at the Conservancy to learn about soil erosion and conservation landscaping.

The service projects will help meet requirements for two Scouting badges, Soil and Water Conservation and Flowers and Gardens; and Scouts will also receive a Conservancy patch. All participants will be eligible to receive native plant seed giveaways. To register, email tabby.fique@hcconservancy.org.

The Conservancy will also host a free "Hike to the River: the Colors of Fall" on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. Woody Merkle and John Cookson will lead this two- to three-hour, moderately difficult hike, which crosses meadows and descends hilly terrain to the Patapsco River during fall foliage season.

To learn more, go to http://www.hcconservancy.org. The address is 10520 Old Frederick Road (Route 99), in Woodstock, and the phone number is 410-465-8877.

Do you like to finish your holiday shopping early? St. James United Methodist Church can help you get a jump on the season with its sixth annual Craft and Vendor Show on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include handmade crafts, a bake table and a secondhand sale.

Hot breakfast items will be available for purchase until 11 a.m., and then hot dogs will round out the lunch menu. Of course, the St. James congregation would also like to remember those less fortunate and invites donations of nonperishable food items for the local food bank.

The church is near the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, at 12470 Old Frederick Road (Route 99), in Marriottsville. The phone number is 410-442-2020.
