We have all heard about the 1969 Woodstock Festival that took place in New York, but a new Woodstock Music Festival and Picnic is coming to Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2-5 p.m.
Unlike the original event, this one is decidedly family-friendly. It is hosted by the St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Knights of Columbus and will feature Columbia-based Phil Heiliger and his band.
Admission is free, and hot dogs and light refreshments will be available. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs and any additional picnic fare, and come celebrate the end of summer. The address is 10800 Old Court Road, in Woodstock. For more information, call Bob McAllister at 410-952-7929.
Do you enjoy nature and wish to share your expertise with the next generation? The Howard County Conservancy seeks volunteer naturalists to assist staff during the fall 2013 field trip season. Volunteers are asked to lead a minimum of three hikes during the months of October and November.
Training will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sep. 10 and 17, for the secondary program, and on Thursdays, Sep. 12, 19 and 26, for the elementary program. Last year, the Conservancy reached more than 8,500 children through its educational outreach.
To register for the training or learn more, call 410-465-8877. The Conservancy's website is http://www.hcconservancy.org.
In the fall of 1988, Glenelg United Methodist Church kicked off a new ministry program, a community nursery school open to all. Commonly referred to as "GUMC" (pronounced gum-see), the center has since altered its name from "nursery school" to "preschool" and made other changes along the way, but has always operated a popular, well-respected program.
In celebration of the school's 25th anniversary, the GUMC Preschool Board will host an open house on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All current and former teachers, students, and their families are invited to attend. Just imagine — some of the earliest students from the program are now approaching age 30 and may have children of their own!
If you know any GUMC graduates who no longer live in the area, please spread the word about this opportunity to revisit the facility and connect with others who have played a part in the history of the preschool. Refreshments will be served, and a church service and blessing of the preschool staff will precede the open house at 9:30 a.m. This year, GUMC Preschool is excited to welcome a new preschool director, Alex Melnick.
To learn more about the festivities, contact Dana Donohue, chairperson of the Preschool Board, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Direct any questions about the preschool program to 410-489-7702, or go to http://www.glenelgumc.org/nursery.php.
