Now that August has arrived, our summer fun has, sadly, begun drawing to a close.
In Sykesville, the Tunes under the Main Street Moon concert series will conclude on Friday, Aug. 9, 7-10 p.m., with the Royal Phonics, a Maryland-based cover band. Come hear the group perform in the gazebo, and make sure to check out the local shops, which will offer various specials, plus complimentary wine and refreshments.
The next evening, Saturday Aug. 10, marks the final date for the Sykesville Cinema Outdoor Movies at South Branch Park, 307 West Friendship Road. "American Graffiti" will begin at dusk. Remember to bring lawn chairs and snacks, or purchase popcorn, candy and beverages onsite. In case of inclement weather, call the Sykesville Cinema Hotline at 443-300-8724.
Lastly, the Sykesville Concerts in the Park series will offer its final performance on Friday, Aug. 16, when oldies band Pet Rock takes the stage from 7 to 9 p.m. at Millard Cooper Park, 7252 Cooper Drive. Parking is free across the street at Sykesville Middle School, and the venue includes a snack bar with hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy, Hoffman's ice cream, and drinks.
Each of these Sykesville events is free to the community. To learn more, go to http://www.sykesvillemainstreet.com.
Heather Wandell, community outreach volunteer at Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary, is delighted with the response to Frisky's 2013 summer tours. The Sanctuary has experienced such tremendous interest that it added an additional tour date in August, yet it has still filled all available slots and begun a waiting list. Consequently, all further tours are closed for the year. Make sure to check http://www.friskys.org next April, and sign up early for the 2014 tours.
Of course, Frisky's continues to need volunteers and donations year-round. Since the facility runs purely on volunteer manpower, 100 percent of each donation directly supports the animals. Go to the above website to learn how to help.
