West Friendship Elementary School band teacher Amy Syversen would like to recognize a group of students before the end of the school year.

Congratulations to the June Band Musicians of the Month — Sophia Carey, clarinet; Hanna Davé, flute; Juliette LaVeck, flute; Kyle Parker, trombone; Alyssa Peffall, percussion; Kamiye Runsewe, alto saxophone; and Ethan Triska, clarinet.

Additionally, the band students have worked hard to memorize up to 10 scales over the course of the year, and it is time to give a final shout-out to those who have successfully reached Scale Star status:

A.J. Angarita, trumpet (C Major); Jack Baxter, bells (F Major, G Major); Jonathan Bitterli, tuba (Chromatic, B Flat Major, E Flat Major, G Major); McKenna Boyce, clarinet (G Major); Sophia Carey, clarinet, (Chromatic); Krysta Cartee, flute (F Major, B Flat Major); Jacob Coomber, alto saxophone (Chromatic); Madi Costigan, bass clarinet (F Major); Eric Ellis, trumpet (C Major); Max Fagerstrom, trumpet (Chromatic, C Major, F Major, B Flat Major, G Major, D Major, A Major); Cole Felch, bassoon (Chromatic, F Major, B Flat Major, A Flat Major); Megan Hettinger, clarinet (F Major); Clare Hinds, flute (B Flat Major, A Flat Major); Alex Lindahl, flute (B Flat Major, E Flat Major, A Flat Major;) Leslie Looney, trumpet (C Major); Joshua Morton, alto saxophone (G Major); Nicholas Randhawa, trumpet (C Major); Kamiye Runsewe, alto saxophone (Chromatic, F Major, G Major, D Major); Mackenzie Ryan, alto saxophone (G Major); Emily Shim, flute (B Flat Major); Julia Skopic, trombone (B Flat Major); Jessica Turner, alto saxophone (C Major, G Major); and Will Vaxmonsky, trumpet (C Major).

Four students have memorized all 10 scales and have thus earned the Super Scale Star designation — Hanna Davé; Isabella Hwang, oboe; Luke Iannuzzi, bells; and Joshua Wright, bells. Wow — great job!

Looking for a free outdoor concert? The Sykesville Main Street Association will host two events this month. First, on Friday, June 14, the Tunes under the Main Street Moon series will present 24 Karat Rock (www.24karatrock.com) jamming in the Main Street Gazebo from 7 to 10 p.m. Shops will remain open late, and wine and refreshments will be available.

Then, on June 21, 7 to 9 p.m., the Concerts in the Park series will continue with Tay Jacobe, the former lead singer of Crossfire. Jacobe will take the stage at Millard Cooper Park to share her unique blend of pop, rock and country music.

The park is on Springfield Avenue, near the intersection of Route 32, and parking is free at Sykesville Middle School. The venue features a snack bar and a lighted playground.

The Glenelg United Methodist Church Food Pantry will hold its monthly opening on Saturday, June 15, 9 to 11 a.m., at 13900 Burntwoods Road, in Glenelg. Questions may be directed to glenelgumcpantry@gmail.com or 410-489-7260.

Last month, this column noted pantry donations from the Glenwood Middle School Leo Club and Boy Scout Troop 707, but other Scouting troops also supported the food pantry through the Scouting for Food Drive. Girl Scout Troop 1899 collected more than 400 pounds of food, and Boy Scout Troop 793 collected nearly 600 pounds.

In addition, Zach Drake, from Troop 793, collected and donated more than 150 pounds of food for his Eagle Scout project.

The pantry received an amazing 1,800 pounds of food! The Scouts also helped to sort and shelve all of these donations.

Because of the community's generosity, the pantry is seeking mainly monetary contributions this month.

The book was edited by historical society board member Society Shelley Davies Wygant.

Wygant will sign copies of the book on Saturday, June 15, noon to 3 p.m., at Costco, 6675 Marie Curie Drive, in Elkridge. Contact the society at 410-480-3250 with any questions.
