Reservoir cross country takes boys, girls team races in home tri-meet

Atholton and Long Reach traveled to Reservoir High School Monday for the schools’ first cross country tri-meet of the season. With Reservoir's Owen Pochettino (16:58.10) and Karli Smirgalia (19:35.46) each placing first in the boys and girls races, it was the home team Gators that swept the day.

Atholton’s Bryce Rosicky finished second for the boys, while Timothy Bernard (Atholton), Alex Hedgren (Reservoir) and Ricardo Rosario (Reservoir) rounded out the top five.

Eric Haney was Long Reach’s top finisher, coming in at 21st overall.

The boys team race was tight, as the Gators (25) were able to sneak by the Raiders (30). Long Reach finished with 85 points.

For the girls race, Jill Greenwald finished second, followed by Kelsey Ponton (Reservoir), Tory LaFemina (Reservoir) and Rosemary Davidson (Atholton).

Jade Miller, the top runner for the Lightning, finished 22nd overall.

The girls team race was a bit more lopsided, as Reservoir took home the victory with 21 points. Atholton (38) followed in second, while Long Reach (85) finished third.

River Hill Hawks soar over Glenelg, Howard

River Hill continued its dominating start to the season Monday as well, joining Glenelg in a tri-meet hosted by Howard High School.

For the boys, the Hawks compiled six of the race’s first seven finishers, with Chris Heydrick placing first (16:44.91). Howard’s Luke Filar broke up River Hill’s attempt at a perfect seven for seven, finishing fourth overall with a time of 17:33.64.

Garrett Birsa was Glenelg’s top finisher, placing 13th overall (18:27.26). 

The River Hill boys team cruised, picking up the win with 17 points. Home team Howard (43) took second, while Glenelg (80) finished third.

Allison Krein led the Hawks girls team to victory, picking up the individual win with a time of 18:58.09. Glenelg sisters Julia (second, 19:58.34) and Cara Nardone (20:11:92) rounded out the top three.

Howard’s Gabrielle Rayner finished fourth (20:15.84).

The Hawks girls squad finished first with 29 points, followed by the Gladiators with 42, and the Lions with 62.
