The two Maryland Welcome Centers on I-95 in Howard County between Routes 32 and 216 will be closed for paving projects starting next week, the State Highway Administration announced.
The closures will begin Monday, May 13, with one welcome center closed at a time. The center on I-95 southbound will be closed first and after one or two weeks, weather permitting, work will be complete and the center on I-95 northbound will be closed. The administration said the project will be completed by June 30, weather permitting.
The closures will be 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The entire rest area will be closed, including the welcome center, restrooms and all car, truck, RV and bus parking. Overnight truck parking will be permitted and restrooms will be open for the evening and overnight hours. Visitors must depart by 8 a.m.
“Maryland’s welcome centers and rest areas are popular locations year round,” SHA District Engineer Dave Coyne said in a news release. “Paving the parking areas during the weekday prevents inconveniences during the overnight hours or weekends when higher volumes of use are expected. SHA appreciates motorists’ patience during this temporary inconvenience and encourages travelers to plan ahead for alternatives.”
Other truck parking and amenities are available at Travel Centers of America off exit 41, four miles north of the welcome centers for motorists to use during closures.
The I-95 welcome centers are at mile-marker 37 in the Savage-Laurel area. As part of the $1.2 million project, crews will resurface and restripe all 76 regular parking spaces, 18 RV spaces and 21 truck spaces at the northbound rest area, as well as the 93 regular parking spaces at the southbound center.
The RV and truck parking at the southbound rest area is not included in the resurfacing because it will be reconfigured in a separate project later this spring to expand the parking lot, according to the administration. The existing parking will remain open during that project.
The administration’s contractor for paving is P. Flanigan &; Sons, Inc. of Baltimore. Questions about the project can be directed to the administration’s’ District 7 office at 301-624-8100 or toll-free at 800-635-5119, or by emailing SHADistrict7@sha.state.md.us.¿
