I know that we strangely had snow last week but the West Laurel Swim Club is preparing for warmer weather. The West Laurel Swim Club's 2014 season is May 24 through Sept. 1 and memberships are available. So many wonderful memories have been made there over the years. My own children grew up summer after summer enjoying all that our neighborhood pool had to offer. Our whole family enjoyed being part of the Wahoo swim team. We all enjoyed meeting our friends whether it was during the weekdays, weekends or for a nice evening swim. As a young mother, I met other moms there and have kept some of those special friendships to this day. Joining the West Laurel Swim Club is the deal of the century. You get summers of fun, friendship and a lifetime of very special memories. There is no summer boredom for the kids when you join the swim club because there are always activities. For membership information, news, swim lessons and swim team updates, go to westlaurelswimclub.com. And now...calling all Wahoo swimmers. The 2014 swim team season begins with registration on May 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the pool. All swim club members, ages 5 to 18 years old who pass the deep water swim proficiency test, can be a Wahoo. Go Wahoos!
Bond Mill Elementary will celebrate Career Day on Friday, May 2. If there is anyone from the neighborhood who might have an interesting career to share with the children, Principal Justin FitzGerald would love to talk to you soon. Please call the main office at 301-497-3600.
Bond Mill Elementary has made history once again with top winners of the Prince George's County Write a Book contest. There is so much that goes into preparing these books, not only good stories and creative illustrations, but also book binding and a very specific and professional presentation. All of these qualities are scored as hundreds of books from all schools in the county are entered. Congratulations to the following talented young Bond Mill authors: First place — Sydni Samuels, Cora Schweiss, Joshua Webb, Nate Ludlam and Kenny Graninger; second place — Alexis Casey, Grace Zack, Caroline Lehman, Gavin Crisologo; third place — Ariel Dominguez; and honorable mention — Amari Muhammad and Savanah Whitley.
Kindergarten registration for the 2014 -2015 school year is ongoing. If you have a kindergartner or know of someone in your neighborhood who has a child who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1, please spread the word to register as soon as possible. Do not wait until summer; kindergartners are being registered now. For more information, call Bond Mill Elementary at 301-497-3600.
Mark your calendars: The Bond Mill PTO Spring Carnival will take place on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entire community is invited to participate. There are activities for the old and the young and the in-between.
I really don't like mentioning the "s" word again, but due to our rough winter and snowy days, the Prince George's County School System has finally determined the last day of school for the 2013-2014 school year is June 13, and it is a half day.
