Support Side by Side, enjoy spring bike ride [West Laurel]

The much anticipated second annual Side by Side Ride will be held the morning of Saturday, April 26.

This fun bike-ride fundraiser offers three routes beginning at Bethany Community Church on Riding Stable Road. There is a 10-mile ride for children and adults (children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult); a 20-mile ride to Savage Mill and back for teens and adults; and a 40-mile ride to Brighton Dam and back for serious riders. To register online, go to or call 202-710-5555. Spring is here; it's time to ride and support Laurel youngsters and their families.

This is what I like about our community here in West Laurel. We can all get excited about Dumpster Day on April 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (or until all three Dumpsters are full) in the parking lot of the West Laurel Community Building. Dumpster Day is sponsored by the West Laurel Civic Association.

It's time for spring cleaning. One of the three Dumpsters will be designated for electronics recycling. Hazardous materials, which include used oil, oil-based paint, tires, propane tanks, glass and mirrors, and computer monitors, will not be accepted. They will accept mattresses, old furniture, light construction debris, broken toys and household items.

Volunteers from the West Laurel Civic Association will direct cars to the Dumpsters and lend assistance in filling them. If you are willing to help at the community center to direct traffic and help unload, or need high school community service hours, call Melissa at 301-776-2314 or or Cassandra,

Registration for kindergarten for 2014-2015 will take place April 7 to 11, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Bond Mill Elementary for those who live in the West Laurel boundary area. Children need to be 5 years old by Sept. 1. Registration must be done by the child's parent or legal guardian.

Please bring your child's original birth certificate, Social Security card (optional), immunization records, your photo ID and proof of residency (signed current lease, deed, signed settlement papers or a current monthly mortgage statement, plus two pieces of current official mail in original envelopes). Prince George's County Public Schools no longer accepts cellphone bills as proof of residency.

If you have any questions, please call the office 301-497-3600.

Our neighbor Polly Gould, a member of the Woman's Club of Laurel and a Bond Mill teacher, has been very sick for a long time. Now free from grueling chemotherapy treatments, she is back in the pink and feeling so much better. She has returned to work and the students and staff have been very excited to finally have her back.
