Roller skater practicing for Stars on Wheels competition [Russett]
It's that time of year again! After a long hiatus, roller skating phenom Eric Mical has donned his roller skates once again and will be skating in the 14th annualStars On Wheels Spring Invitational at the Wheels Skating Center in Odenton from Saturday, March 18 through Monday, March 20 (final schedule to be determined). Eric will be skating in the Juvenile/Elementary B boys category on March 18.
The Spring Invitational event is free; for detailed information, go to www.wheelsrsc.com.
With his new skating schedule, you will find Eric diligently practicing his jumps, sit spins and more at the Laurel Skating Center in North Laurel under the direction of his coach, Ronald Fitzgerald, a 2001 inductee to the USARS Athletes Roller Skating Hall of Fame. On Saturdays, he skates at the Wheels Skating Center in Odenton, and he has a new pairs partner, Caitlin Finkbeiner, who will also be skating in the invitational. Just getting started as a new pair, Eric and Caitlin won't be skating together at the invitational but will be in future competitions.
"Practice makes perfect" as the old saying goes and in doing so, Eric has set his sights on participating in the 2019 USA Rollersports World Championships also known as "Worlds."
Congratulations and good luck! Follow-ups on Eric's journey will appear in future columns.
Spring has sprung and with that, comes Earth Day, which is on Saturday, April 22. In the meantime, if you want to help make a difference in your surrounding environment and community prior to Earth Day, come on out on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon for the Russett-Wide Spring Clean-Up Day. Interested Russett residents and homeowners should meet at the Russett Community Center to pick up supplies, such as gloves and bags. Last year, approximately ½ ton of trash was collected and hauled away from the trails and ravines. This year's project has been adopted by local Boy Scout Troop 2016 as a service project.
