The association, in existence since 1969, was chartered by the Division of Services and Programs for the Aging in Prince George County. The group's goal is to make the golden years in the lives of senior citizens as rewarding and independent as possible. Its mission is to ensure that those counted among the senior set feel appreciated, respected and vital.

The Laurel Senior Friendship Club office at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center is open weekdays from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. If you have an interest in joining, or would like to gather more information, call 301-206-3380.

Do you find yourself wondering what to do with your old, tattered/torn American flag? There is proper protocol for retiring such a pennant. You may drop it off during the month of April at Shady Tree Daycare Center, 381 Main St., accessible from Fourth Street. Owner Joyce Carter and her staff will be collecting the flags Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. If you are unable to arrive during the specified time, you may leave the flag, wrapped in a plastic bag, at the business's door. The worn flags will then be turned over to a local Boy Scout Troop, which will "retire the colors" at campfire ceremonies, as authorized by Congress.

The Department of Public Works will hold its annual electronics recycling and paper shredding event this Saturday, April 18, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Public Works Facility, 305-307 First St. You will be required to show proof of city residency. Office Shredding, a document destruction company, will be on hand during the same hours, to provide mass disposal of documents. The city will provide a recycling truck for boxes and other recyclable materials.

Old Town's Main Street Festival will be held Saturday May 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The daylong event, which draws tens of thousands of revelers, has become an unofficial holiday of sorts, and is a great time to reconnect with folks you may only see at this one day, annual event. Numerous food vendors will be on hand. Live entertainment will go on at several venues along the fabled street. Other purveyors will have all manner of gifts and novelties for sale. Join us. Make a day of it!
