Prince George's County Council member Mary Lehman and her colleagues have no authority to raise the minimum wage, to mandate what private businesses must pay their employees. That is a matter solely between employer and employees. Lehman says, regarding her idea to raise the minimum wage, "We have to take care of our citizens." Well, employers are citizens, too, and when the government forces them to pay higher wages that means fewer other citizens will become employees, will have jobs, as Toucan Taco owner Ginger Reeves indicated in your news story. I bet if you had interviewed more small business owners in the Laurel area they too would have said a higher minimum wage means fewer people hired and higher prices for the products of those businesses.
