Three months after a fire melted and destroyed playground equipment at Laurel's Discovery Community Park, the city is throwing a party to celebrate the park's new, rebuilt equipment.
The reopening celebration will be held Monday, June 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the park, located at the corner of Harrison Drive and Greenhill Avenue. The city will provide arts and crafts, playground challenges and free refreshments.
A March 3 fire, which Laurel Police and fire investigators determined was set by an arsonist, caused more than $100,000 in damages at Discovery Community Park. A second fire, also ruled as arson, destroyed the playground equipment at Emancipation Community Park on March 11 and also caused around $100,000 in damages. Playground equipment at Emancipation Community Park has been removed and will not be rebuilt until work is completed on expanding the adjacent Laurel Library, city officials said. The library construction is expected to begin in October and be completed in late 2014.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in connection with the playground fires.
