Two-car collision kills 1, injures 3 Monday in Laurel

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a two-car collision that killed a 46-year-old woman on Monday in Laurel.

Police were called around 5:25 p.m. on Oct. 23 to the intersection of Laurel-Bowie and Bowie roads, where Lucia Espirtu-Cortez, of Laurel, was one of two passengers in a van along with the driver. Police said the driver of the van was traveling on northbound Laurel-Bowie Road.

When the driver attempted to turn left onto Bowie Road, police said another vehicle, traveling on southbound Laurel-Bowie Road, struck the van. Espirtu-Cortez was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police said the van’s driver and second passenger and the second vehicle’s driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit continued to investigate the fatal crash Tuesday evening, police said.
