Driver trapped by live wires after Laurel crash isn't injured

A dump truck crash in Laurel Monday morning caused downed power lines and trapped the driver while also disabling a traffic signal at Route 197 and Route 198.

The driver, who was trapped for about an hour, was not injured, according to Laurel spokeswoman Audrey Barnes, who also said power to the traffic signal and affected residents had been restored as of Monday afternoon.

Barnes said the accident occurred about 8 a.m. The driver of the dump truck, from Chamberlain Contractors, left the contractor's facility with the bed of the truck up, Barnes said. The raised bed caught on power lines and pulled down the lines and the pole, Barnes said.

Because the lines were live with electricity, Barnes said the driver was trapped in the truck until a little after 9 a.m.

The cleanup and resulting repairs are being paid for by the contractor, Barnes said.
