Garden registration and plot leasing have begun for the coming growing season in the Laurel Community Garden.

The fenced garden is located behind Laurel Presbyterian Church, 7610 Old Sandy Spring Road.

Registration is held weekdays during regular business hours at the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road.

Those joining the garden for the first time pay a one-time joining membership fee of $125. Annual dues, which pay for water and materials, range from $25 to $40, depending on the size of the plot leased.

The garden is a fenced-in area close to half an acre. Garden members can choose plots as small as a 4-by-12-foot raised bed to as large as a 20-by-20-foot garden, according to Suzanna Pieslak, who helped organize the garden last year.

The garden includes a shed for shared tools, and water barrels that allow multiple gardeners to water at the same time, instead of sharing a hose.

The Laurel Community Garden group will hold training in March to explain the basics of growing vegetables and companion flowers to help people get started, Pieslak said.

Garden members have also created two plots where groups of children, such as from a school or day care, can learn about working in a garden and picking vegetables.

Pieslak said there are plenty of plots of all sizes still available. If all plots are leased, the group will create a waiting list.
