McCullough Field is a popular spot for softball leagues, pick-up basketball games and volleyball tournaments. This summer, the sports spot will be the site for something a little more unusual: free, outdoor yoga classes for adults and kids.

Carl Powell, who owns the Magnificent Body in Laurel and was appointed the city's health and wellness ambassador in 2011, is bringing the yoga classes to the stage area of McCullough Field on three Saturdays, May 18, June 22 and July 13, at 1 p.m. Powell said he has two goals for the outdoor exercise: help Laurel residents understand how to take care of themselves; and erase any misconceptions folks might have about yoga and who might benefit from practicing yoga.

"Parents can bring their kids for a Saturday outing," Powell said.

Participants should bring a mat or blanket, and keep in mind that rain could cancel the class.

Powell also has a free tai chi class scheduled for June 7, 6 to 7 p.m., at the Laurel Armory, Fifth and Montgomery streets. The class will be taught by David Dorian Ross, of California, a champion tai chi competitor who has hosted public television programs.

As health and wellness ambassador, Powell has hosted lunch and learn classes for city employees, and also hosts programs on Laurel's cable television station. He said future plans include creating a city health and wellness committee of trainers, acupuncturists and health instructors who would volunteer their time to help promote health and fitness.
