A Laurel car wash is in the running to be named best car wash/detail shop in the country, and its owner has already won a trip to Las Vegas.
Second Street Car Wash, located on Route 1 at Laurel Avenue, is a finalist in radio and television personality Steve Harvey's Neighborhood Awards, formerly known as the Hoodie Awards. In one day of online voting May 16 at Harvey's website steveharvey.com Second Street Car Wash garnered enough votes to land in the top four in the category nationwide. Final voting in the category will be on June 6, and the winner will be announced in July.
Second Street Car Wash owner Raymond Matthews, and owners of the other businesses in the top four of a dozen Neighborhood Awards categories, won a trip to Las Vegas for the awards ceremony in August. Other businesses that are finalists for best car wash/detail shop are located in New Orleans, Virginia Beach and New Jersey, Matthews said.
The Neighborhood Awards gathers votes through local radio stations on everything from best church choir to best barbecue, and best high school, high school coach, teacher and community leader. The awards are promoted locally on radio station WHUR 96.3.
With the national win, Matthews said he wants to "put Laurel, Maryland on the map." To thank voters, Matthews will offer $5 car washes at Second Street Car Wash on June 6.
