Workers were busy removing the canopy outside the now-closed Laurel Art Center on Main Street Thursday, but the restoration work was not being extended inside,
Mike Emery, the grandson of store owners Leo and Joyce Emery, said Thursday that the store's canopy was badly damaged during winter storms and was being torn down.
"We will strip it to the metal and replace it," Emery said.
The popular art supply store closed its doors last year.
The store opened in 1977 and became a regional shopping destination for artists. The family closed the store in 2012, citing Leo Emery's failing health and lagging sales.
Emery said his family still owns the store, but are keeping it vacant while they decide future plans.
