Riverfront Park in Laurel is closed today, and the American Legion commuter parking lot is expected to be closed Friday morning, according to city spokeswoman Audrey Barnes, who said city officials took action in anticipation of possible flooding with the forecast of up to three inches of rain today and tomorrow.

WSSC opened the bottom valve of the T. Howard Duckett Dam Tuesday night and opened at least one gate on the dam Wednesday night, causing water to spill over the banks of the Patuxent River in Riverfront Park Thursday morning, Barnes said.

Riverfront Park, one block north of Main Street; and the MARC commuter parking lot adjacent to American Legion Post 60, at 2 Main St., are frequently flooded when the Patuxent River is swollen by heavy rainfall and when the gates of the dam are opened.
