Happy New Year to everyone. Yes, 2013 is coming to an end and this will be the last column of the year. I hope 2014 will bring everyone joy and happiness.
Many in this community know Jim Tull. For over 20 years, Jim has repaired musical instruments for students all around the area, as well as the school system.
Jim has decided to retire and his shop closed officially on Dec. 24. Jim and his wife Diana will be moving to Virginia next year. I hope they enjoy their retirement and thank him for his many years of helping our students.
This year our area had six football teams. Teams are created based on age groups and placed in divisions. Four of those teams made the playoffs. Two won their division Superbowls and three of the teams are heading to the state finals. That is a very impressive record.
The 6- to 8-year-old Centennial team, coached by Fernando Falcon, has an undefeated record of 14-0 and will be playing against the Bowie Bulldogs. The 6- to 8-year-old Federal team has an impressive record of 13-1. Their only loss was the first game of the season. They will be playing the Dunkirk Warriors.
The 7-9 Centennial team has a record of 12-2 and will be playing the Hampstead Ravens. Their coach is William Griffin. This rematch will be very exciting since they just played in the championship game and the game was decided in the final 20 seconds. Who will win this one? Stay tuned and I will let you know. I wish all three teams good luck.
They are part of the Mid Maryland Youth Football and Cheerleading League.
Happy 40th birthday to Laurel Woods Elementary School. This school has proudly served our community and will celebrate with a party at the North Laurel Community Center on Jan. 3, starting at 6 p.m. Past students, faculty and parents are all welcome to attend. Laurel Woods was originally Whiskey Bottom Road Elementary School, but a group of students petitioned the school system to change the name in the 1990's. The school opened in January 1974.
Gorman Crossing will host We Can Workshops for its families to learn how to enhance student's activity and nutrition. It was created by the National Institutes of Health and will be on Jan. 15, 22, 29 and Feb. 4, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.
I hope everyone makes a New Year's Resolution to send me at least one item for my column in 2014. It can be a birthday or anniversary wish, notice of someone who has passed away or something fun that happened with your kids, their school or an event in our community. Just remember to give me at least two week's notice. Happy New Years.
