Everyone tells their children to reach for the stars while growing up. That is exactly what Kelsey Wood loves to do.
Kelsey, a junior at the University of Maryland and local North Laurel resident, is interning at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
Kelsey thought she wanted to major in graphic arts until she took a geology class. She was hooked. She has always loved Earth Science, but she now wants to learn about other terrestrial bodies as well so changing to Geology as her major was natural for her.
This summer, Kelsey got accepted into the internship of her dreams. It gave her a chance to do the work she wants to do with experts in their field.
This summer, she is looking through images of Mar's surface trying to find inflated lava flows. The images came from the Mars Odyssey Spacecraft. Kelsey will also be mapping ancient crater lakes and draining basins on Mars, using GIS technology, in order to learn more about the conditions that may have been on Mars in the past.
Kelsey says, "I could not be more excited about this internship. It is so fun and challenging and is the sort of work I hope to do after I graduate."
Keep reaching for the stars, Kelsey. She is also planning Mars Day at the Museum and designing postcards of recent images from Mars and running activities during the event on July 26.
